The firm
An HR firm that chose to do one thing.
Natural Harmonics Careers is a San Francisco HR consulting and reverse recruiting practice operating as a bonded California Employment Agency. We represent one kind of candidate — the technology PhD — in one market, on one contingent fee. Everything else, we declined.

Why we exist
The most credentialed people in the market are the worst served by it.
Recruiting is built for employers: they pay, so the search serves their opening. A doctorate entering industry meets that machinery with no advocate, a CV written for a hiring committee, and no idea what the role should pay. The result is predictable — brilliant people under-levelled and under-paid for years.
We inverted the model. The candidate is the client. The search is built around their trajectory. The compensation position is built from a valuation, not from what they earn today. And because we are paid only when they start, our incentives and theirs point the same way.
The candidate is the client
What we stand for
Four commitments that shape every engagement.
Aligned incentives
Our fee is contingent and due only after you start. If you are not placed, you owe nothing. That keeps the work honest and the effort relentless.
Radical transparency
Both fee streams disclosed before you sign. The fee schedule posted publicly. Independent counsel offered at our cost. Nothing is discovered later.
Documented method
Six phases, written procedures, logged estimates against actuals, and a process-gap record that turns every improvisation into a standard.
Local depth
One market, so employer intelligence stays current, introductions carry weight, and every valuation is specific to a company and a role in the Bay Area.
HR consulting × reverse recruiting
Why the hybrid matters.
A pure recruiter sells access. A pure consultant sells advice. Placing a doctorate at $250,001+ needs both — the research and valuation discipline of an HR practice, and the direct advocacy of a recruiter with a mandate.
Per-position payroll & benefits valuation
Every compensation figure traces to a source or a stated assumption. Estimates are marked as estimates. Numbers are built to be presented to employers and defended.
Positioning & career counselling
Goals, readiness for the band, transition concerns and the compensation conversation — including California's salary-history prohibition — handled before the first interview.
Direct advocacy with an exclusive brief
Employer research, ranked target lists, outreach to hiring managers, interview coordination and negotiation — one accountable recruiter, start to finish.
Recruiter · valuation · counselling
Regulated by design
We chose to be an employment agency — with everything that entails.
Many career services avoid the term because it brings obligations. We sought it out. A bonded California Employment Agency owes its clients statutory protections that a coaching business does not.
- Surety bond filed with the California Secretary of State — Bond No. 566610Y, effective September 1, 2026
- Fee schedule delivered before any counsellor interview, and posted publicly
- No registration fee, confession of judgment, promissory note or wage assignment — by statute and by choice
- Refund and ninety-day placement protections under Civil Code §1812.506
- Salary-history practices compliant with Labor Code §432.3
- CCPA/CPRA privacy rights honoured; we do not sell or share personal information
We would rather decline an engagement early than take one we cannot serve well. A firm that says yes to everyone is not representing anyone.
